Tostada Components

  • 10 pieces tostada shells (or regular corn tortillas)
  • 1 can refried beans
  • 1 lb ground beef (or substitute cooked shredded chicken, pork, or beef)
  • ¼ cup onion diced
  • 1 Tablespoon chili powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoons paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 0.25 teaspoons oregano
  • 0.25 teaspoons black pepper
  • 0.5 head lettuce finely chopped
  • 1 cup queso fresco (or other cheese)
  • 1 large avocado
  • 0.5 cup Mexican crema (or sour cream)
  • 1 cup salsa (pico de gallo or salsa verde)

Preparation Steps

  • Bake or fry the corn tortillas if not using store-bought tostada shells.
  • Add ground beef to a skillet over medium heat. Cook, breaking into small pieces, until browned. Remove excess grease.
  • Add onion and seasonings and cook for an additional few minutes.
  • Heat refried beans in a microwave-safe bowl or small skillet over medium heat, stirring in a small scoop of sour cream until warmed through.
  • Assemble the tostadas by spreading a thin layer of refried beans over the tostada shell. Top with ground beef, lettuce, cheese, avocado, salsa, and sour cream.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

To make ahead: Prepare and store all ingredients separately in the fridge. Re-warm meat and beans when ready to serve and assemble tostadas. Gluten-free adaptations: Use corn tortillas.
