Equipment

  • Medium saucepan

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 cups fresh or frozen cranberries one 12-ounce package

Optional Add-ins

  • pecans chopped
  • orange zest
  • raisins
  • currants
  • blueberries
  • cinnamon pinch
  • nutmeg pinch
  • allspice pinch

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Rinse the cranberries in a colander and remove any bruised or damaged ones.
  • Combine the sugar and water in a medium saucepan over high heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves and bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Stir the cranberries into the boiling water and sugar mixture. Bring back to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, or until most of the cranberries have burst.
  • Leave the cranberry sauce as is, or dress it up with your favorite extras like chopped pecans, orange zest, or additional fruit. Add spices if desired. Adjust to taste.
  • Remove the pot from heat and let the cranberry sauce cool completely at room temperature. Transfer to a bowl and chill in the refrigerator.
  • Serve and enjoy this cranberry sauce as a side dish for your holiday meals or as a spread for leftovers.

Notes

Don’t overcook the cranberries; adjust the sweetness to taste. Let the sauce cool completely for better flavor, and make ahead for optimal taste.
