Equipment

  • Medium saucepan

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar 200g
  • 1 cup water 250ml
  • 4 cups fresh or frozen cranberries one 12-ounce package
  • pecans optional
  • orange zest optional
  • raisins optional
  • currants optional
  • blueberries optional
  • cinnamon optional
  • nutmeg optional
  • allspice optional

Instructions

  • Rinse the cranberries in a colander and remove any bruised or damaged ones.
  • Combine the sugar and water in a medium saucepan over high heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves and bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Stir the cranberries into the boiling water and sugar mixture. Bring back to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, or until most of the cranberries have burst.
  • Leave the cranberry sauce as is, or dress it up with your favorite extras. Stir in chopped pecans, orange zest, or additional fruit like raisins, currants, or blueberries. Add spices if desired. Adjust to taste.
  • Remove the pot from heat and let the cranberry sauce cool completely at room temperature. Transfer to a bowl and chill in the refrigerator.
  • Serve the cranberry sauce as a side dish for holiday meals or as a spread for leftovers.

Notes

Don't overcook the cranberries and adjust sweetness to taste. Make ahead for better flavor as it deepens overnight.
