Equipment

  • Tart pan
  • Baking Sheet
  • oven
  • mixing bowl

Ingredients

Tart Ingredients

  • 1 single pie crust for the tart shell
  • 4-6 firm apples
  • 1 tablespoon citric acid or ½ cup lemon juice mixed with 2 cups of water
  • ¾ cup chopped walnuts
  • ¼ cup dried cranberries
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1 ½ tablespoons orange juice
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon optional

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Peel, halve, and core the apples, ensuring seeds and hard bits are removed.
  • Mix the citric acid or lemon juice with water in a bowl deep enough to cover the apple halves. Carve faces into the apple halves, then place them in the water bath.
  • Shake off and pat the apples dry. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 200°F for approximately 3 hours.
  • Move the apples to a cooling rack (or leave them on the sheet) and bake for another 2-3 hours, or until the apple heads are shriveled but soft inside.
  • Increase the oven temperature to 350°F. Line a tart pan with the pie crust, prick the bottom with a fork, trim the edges, and bake for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the partially baked crust from the oven, arrange the shrunken apple heads inside, and bake until the tart is ready.

Notes

This tart can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator until serving.
