Equipment

  • Skillet
  • saucepan

Ingredients

Steak

  • 1 lb steak strips (sirloin, flank, or ribeye)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cumin

Flavorful Rice

  • 1 cup jasmine or basmati rice
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika

Queso Sauce

  • 1 cup shredded white cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup Monterey Jack cheese
  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional for spice

Optional Toppings

  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 jalapeño sliced
  • 1 tablespoon sour cream
  • ½ cup diced tomatoes

Instructions

Steak Preparation

  • Combine 1 lb of steak strips with olive oil, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and cumin. Mix well to coat the meat evenly.
  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the steak strips for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until nicely browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Rice Preparation

  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add rice and stir until lightly golden, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Pour in beef broth, salt, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and cook for 15 to 20 minutes until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.

Queso Sauce Preparation

  • In a saucepan, combine white cheddar, Monterey Jack, heavy cream, cream cheese, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Warm over low heat, stirring until cheese melts and sauce is smooth, about 5 minutes.

Assembly

  • Fluff the rice with a fork and transfer to a serving plate. Place the steak on top and drizzle with queso sauce.
  • Garnish with chopped cilantro, jalapeño slices, sour cream, and diced tomatoes.

Notes

For a spicier dish, add more cayenne pepper to the queso sauce or additional jalapeños as topping.
